The heritage of music in the Anglican tradition is one of our parish’s greatest gifts to the missionary and spiritual life of the Christ’s Church. Since the sixteenth century, trained choirs of children and adults have led Prayer Book worship throughout the Anglican Communion, and it is so today.
Here at St. Matthew’s, our choirs and instrumentalists provide music for more than 100 services and events each year. In return, the singers and players participate not only in high-quality music making, but also receive Christian education and the benefits of small group fellowship.
For young people, our choir program gives instruction in the basics of church music performance and history, significant opportunities for meeting challenges in a loving, team-oriented environment, and the privilege and responsibility of leading God’s praises in public worship. Through a structured program of rewards, affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music, beginning in the first grade, our singers learn to appreciate the value of achieving short- and long-range goals individually and collectively, have the opportunity to sing some of the greatest of all composed music, and receive early opportunities for social interaction in a Christian context.
Concerts, choir festivals, recording and travel are also part of the program for older children and for adults from time to time. The liturgy and music of the Episcopal Church are strong tools for evangelism, spiritual enrichment, and the sustaining of faith. The music which the Episcopal Church has used for centuries for Eucharist, for Morning Prayer, Evensong and Compline is a treasure available to us for our own expressions of worship and to share with the world.
St. Matthew’s musicians seek to serve God not only by ministering within the parish but also outward, into our community and region as well. Please join us in this work by sending your children to our choirs, by volunteering and by the offering of support.
In addition to our in-house music programs, which greatly enhance our worship experience, we have programs which bring artists from around the world into our community to perform. Our Lenten Concert Series truly enhances the season of Lent for many parishioners. Our annual 4th of July concert is a patriotic romp that regularly fills the church to capacity.
